The poles
and other wood products are treated at the Toktas Treatment
Plant, located in Ceyhan / Adana. This province lies in the
centre of a triangle of three major ports on the Eastern Mediterranean
coast of Turkey, supported by the main highways and railroads
to the Middle East.
The Toktas Treatment Plant began operating in 1984, and has
an annual treatment capacity of approximately 60,000 cubic metres,
using creosote and water-borne salts as preservatives. This
represents the highest impregnation capacity of a single plant
in Turkey, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
One of the major reasons for carrying out impregnation activities
in Turkey is the nearly ideal climatic conditions that the plant
location offers for this process. This further gives the unique
advantage of achieving excellent conditioning of the timber
under atmospheric conditions similar to those of many utility
sites in the Middle East and Africa. This feature eliminates
sudden stresses resulting from dramatic changes in the climatic
conditions between the country of growth and the country of
utilization.
The poles are stacked in open formations for efficient seasoning,
then subjected to dressing and fabrication to meet the client's
requirements, and finally to preservative treatment with the
required penetration and retention of the preservative prior
to shipment to destinations. This whole cycle is relatively
shorter than in Scandinavia, thus minimising the attack of fungi
and other causes for decay prior to treatment.
